Merivale High School - Gymnasium Building

Project Overview

Complete in July 2019, this project included the design and construction of a major addition to Merivale High School. The functional program included 2 new centralized elevators, a student restroom renovation and an addition to a new FIBA official gymnasium including cloakrooms, washroom, office, warehouse, mechanical room and a new main school entrance. Natural light was an important feature of the design and was achieved with large, impact resistant acrylic panels. New landscaping, a new bus disembarkation loop, and a lay-by for car disembarkation was also provided.

A major challenge to this project included construction phases to allow continued use of the school while these different parts were either in construction or renovation work. A detailed plan was created that included building services such as fire alarm, security, communications services, power supply, temporary evacuation routes, and temporary construction fencing to allow the school to operate during construction.

The gym was built using tilt-up panels. The system of tilting insulated concrete panels was perfectly suited to this project, creating a well-insulated and durable building
