Qualicum / Nanaimo Park Community Centre

This new 375 square metre community building was constructed in an existing neighbourhood park located in the west end of Ottawa. The one storey community centre housed a large multi-purpose room with connected kitchen, a quiet room, storage rooms, and washrooms and a change facility for an outdoor rink.

Located in an existing park, the building is designed as a new recreational centre for the neighbourhood, and will include a daycare program, small scale indoor sporting events, and event spaces for various community organizations. The community will also assist in the running of these programs.

The design was reviewed with both City of Ottawa and local community groups to assure that all needs were met in a compact, economical design. The new design also provided the much needed infrastructure for the renewed use of an existing sports field and playground. The scale, materiality, and detailing of the design respected the existing neighbourhood and has become a focus for the surroundings.
