Statistics Canada - Turnstiles
Project Overview
This project included turnstile security upgrades project for Statistics Canada - Jean Talon & R.H. Coates Buildings - located in Tunney’s Pasture Ottawa.
This was a two stage project.
Stage 1 - Study Phase
PR-TY prepared a feasibility study looking at what was involved in replacing and adding 40 turnstiles on two floors in three different Heritage designated (FHBRO) buildings. We were required to provide multiple options and outline the impact of each on budget, scheduling and physical end result. The client required that the construction work be done after regular office hours in an extremely short timeframe. The new security system upgrades and turnstiles required us to do an in depth analysis and interpretation of the National Building Code requirements for egress and exiting. PR-TY was required to work with Heritage Canada conservation specialists and analyze methods that the new turnstiles and electrical and security system conduit could be incorporated without detracting from the heritage designated base building architecture.
Stage 2 - Implementation Phase
One of the recommended options outlined in Phase 1 was adopted. PR-TY proceeded to do site investigations to confirm the scope of demolition and provide a phasing plan to result in minimal disruption to ongoing operations without compromising fire & life safety issues. PR-TY prepared detailed drawings and specifications and issued these for competitive tender. After the bid was awarded we provided construction review services.
Both projects were completed on time and on budget. The end result was an elegant solution to the challenge of accommodating enhanced security requirements while being sympathetic to the heritage character of the existing buildings.
